UPDATE 6-13-2023: No more clear backpacks at Broward public schools. The school board voted 5-4 Tuesday to cease the rule-making process for clear backpacks for the upcoming 2023-24 school year. The sudden vote comes after parents and students spoke out in a heated town hall.

Attention Parents, Guardians, Caregivers, Staff, and Community Members of Broward County Public Schools,

Released (June 13th, 2023) - We wish to update you regarding a crucial decision made during our most recent Regular School Board meeting, which transpired on Tuesday, June 13, 2023. A prominent matter under consideration was the proposal of implementing a clear backpack policy for the upcoming 2023/24 academic year.

The proposition sparked an extensive discussion and ultimately led to a vote. The Board, considering various factors and perspectives, decided not to enforce the suggested clear backpack policy for the forthcoming school year. This decision signifies that the topic of clear backpacks will not be part of the agenda at future meetings, including the Board Workshop scheduled for June 20, 2023, and the Special School Board Meeting planned for July 25, 2023.

BCPS would like to express their sincere appreciation to the school community for your active participation in this discussion. Your engagement and the feedback provided on the subject of clear backpacks, as well as on other safety policies under review, have been invaluable. Please rest assured that every suggestion and concern raised is taken into serious consideration. The ultimate goal is the creation of an environment in the schools that is even safer and more secure than it is at present.

While the clear backpack initiative will not be pursued further at this time, it does not mean that our commitment towards enhancing safety in our schools diminishes. On the contrary, Broward County Public Schools remain steadfast in our pursuit to consider and implement robust safety and security measures in the schools. Broward County Public Schools believes in continuous improvement, and this includes perpetually evaluating the safety protocols in place.

Looking ahead, the district is eager to engage in further dialogues and constructive discussions with parents, staff, and community members about forthcoming safety initiatives. Broward County Public Schools are dedicated to working hand in hand with all stakeholders to ensure the optimal safety and wellbeing of our students.

Thank you for your attention to this matter, and for your ongoing support and commitment to the safety and security of the Broward County Public Schools.
